Medicaid is major source of federal funding for Missouri and creates jobs
Medicaid funding helps keep hospitals open and health care workers working in Missouri.
• Federal Medicaid funding to Missouri was $10 billion in 2023, which was 62% of all federal funding to Missouri• Most of what our state spends on Medicaid is matched by the federal government, at a rate known as the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage. Missouri’s FMAP is 65%.
• The federal matching rate for services provided to people covered under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansion population is 90%.

How does Medicaid support community health centers in Missouri?
Our community health centers pay for doctors, nurses, office space, and medical equipment in part with funds they receive from serving patients who use Medicaid. Cuts to Medicaid funding could cause many community health care clinics in both rural and urban communities to cut services or close.

How does Medicaid support Missouri’s hospitals?
Many Missouri hospitals, especially those in under resourced rural and urban communities, depend on Medicaid to help keep their doors open.
In addition to payments for services provided to Medicaid managed care plan enrollees, Missouri hospitals received $2.6 billion in Medicaid payments in 2023.
This included $1 billion in Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) and other payments that help hospitals offset the cost of care for Medicaid users and uninsured patients.
